Increasing Access to Health Services in Rural China

Calligraphy for Kang or Health

Located in the province of Jiansu, near the banks of the Yangtze River, Ming Feng village has one clinic to provide health services as the nearest hospital is one hour away by bicycle. Since 1980, this private clinic has been serving a population of 2,652 inhabitants of Ming Feng village.

However, recent economic deprivation has resulted in an impoverished population with unmet medical needs. Many young men have left home to try to earn a living in the city of Shanghai in the hopes that they can come back and take care of their families. This has left a vulnerable population of women, children, and elderly citizens who cannot afford even basic services at the clinic. For people who cannot afford to go to the hospital, there is no other medical alternative except this small clinic.
To visit the clinic costs US $.10 cents per patient, per visit, not inclusive of medicine for treatment. This can place a signficant burden on the patient and their family. Ananda Foundation has awarded a grant to Ming Feng clinic to help subsidize the operational costs and clinic fees for patients and local villagers. In addition, elderly patients will be entitled to full subsidy of medication if needed.

The Purpose of Ming Feng Clinic:
To increase the overall health of Ming Feng village
To provide increased access to basic medical services and care to the general population.

The staff of Ming Feng maintain basic public health surveillance (tracking diseases, sickness, and patient needs). The progress and assessment of the clinic's performance will be evaluated at the end of the grant period. It is hoped that Ming Feng will accomplish the following goals:

Goals of Ming Feng Clinic Project

To see fewer repeat patients
To ensure maximum coverage of immunizations.
To increase overall health of community.
To increase health awareness & healthy practices
To find additional sources of funding in community to sustain the clinic.
