Community Based Program for Disadvantaged Children of Pham Van Hai Development Center
Ananda's project is in the village of Pham Van Hai located in south Vietnam two hours outside of Ho Chi Minh city. Our collaborator in this project is the NGO Friends For Street Children (FFSC). Pham Van Hai is one of eight centers operated by FFSC. Pham Van Hai is the smallest development center and has a great need for community outreach.
Through this program, fifty children and their families from low income backgrounds will be assisted. Many of the children are from fragmented backgrounds and some are at high risk to lead a life on the streets because their situation at home may be difficult due to poverty.
This program focuses on healing both the child and the family. Our program focuses on the the holistic well-being of the entire family unit by providing comprehensive services such as leadership and parenting classes, HIV awareness for both teens and their families, after school tutoring, and an annual health checkup for each child and his or her parents. The program also provides an opportunity for students to have cultural experiences, such as visiting a museum or recreation at a local park.
These are rare opportunities if you come from an impoverished background. While children are being helped with their education, parents also undergo training in small business enterprise. In this sense, the project is rehabilitative and concentrates on total health and well being of the human spirit.
