The Hewa Mallikage Family
This family lost their 4-year-old son in the disaster. At the time the waves came, the mother, who is a tailor, was in Galle selling her clothes. The little boy was playing with friends near the temple and was swept away - his body was recovered later.

The remaining family members are the father, mother and two daughters aged 7 and 6. The mother had a tailoring and dressmaking business attached to the house, while the father worked as a day laborer or helped in the shop.
Back part of the houseThe house, shop, all the family's possessions and sewing machines were lost in the tsunami. The surviving members are now staying with relatives inland from Unawatuna, but are destitute.
